Meet the Maine Coonâs fluffy cousin! With a thick coat, sturdy build and playful personality, the Norwegian Forest Cat has plenty in common with this beloved breed.
âBoth are large, muscular and long-haired,â Vasudevan says. âTheyâre also intelligent, playful and affectionate, although Norwegian Forest Cats tend to be a little more independent than the very people-oriented Maine Coon.â
If your favorite thing about Maine Coons is their fluffy coat and adventurous spirit, the Siberian might be your new best friend. These agile felines love to keep their families entertained and will instantly win you over.
âSiberians are fluffy cats with a thick coat and a playful personality,â Vasudevan says. âThese Maine Coon alternative cat breeds tend to be intelligent, social and very involved with their families. Theyâre also athletic cats that often enjoy climbing and exploring.â

Looking for a big cat who wants to be at your side? Ragdolls share the Maine Coonâs affectionate nature, making them a wonderful match for anyone who wants a devoted feline sidekick.
âTheyâre large and known for being incredibly people-oriented,â Vasudevan explains. However, even though they are similar when it comes to their appearance, there are a couple differences potential pet parents should know as they arenât as playful and energetic. âRagdolls tend to be calmer and more relaxed than Maine Coons,â Vasudevan points out.
Personality: Loving, intelligent, relaxed
Think of the Ragamuffin as a cuddly, plush-coated variation of the Maine Coon. These robust, long-haired cats have a gentle personality and love being part of the action at home.
âThey have a substantial build and a reputation for being sweet and very people-focused,â Vasudevan explains. In fact, she says these cats have dog-like personalities, just like Maine Coons do. âThey generally enjoy being part of whatever their family is doing rather than being completely independent cats.â
Not every Maine Coon look-alike is a giant fluffball. Thatâs where Birmans come in. These felines are a smaller cat breed with a distinct appearance, but their gentle, sociable personalities make them a natural fit for families.
âFor someone who loves the Maine Coonâs family-friendly temperament, but doesnât necessarily need the giant size or shaggy appearance, a Birman can be a great alternative,â Vasudevan reveals.
Therefore, if youâre more a fan of their overall personality and not necessarily their big cat build, a Birdman could be just what youâre after.
Personality: Gentle, social, affectionate
