Alan Kyerematen Creates Suspense Over Possible Return to NPP as Hopeson Adorye Declares His Side

Omanhene Kwabena Asante, a veteran Ghanaian broadcaster, has backed the idea of allowing President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third term if the country’s Constitution is amended to permit it.

During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen, Omanhene stated that he would have no objection to another Mahama presidency if the constitutional framework were changed. He added that Ghanaians should determine the matter through the established constitutional process.

His comments have brought renewed attention to Ghana’s presidential term limits. The 1992 Constitution restricts an individual to a maximum of two presidential terms, meaning that any attempt to change the limit would have to follow the required constitutional procedures.

Explaining his position, Omanhene emphasised the benefits of leadership experience. He suggested that someone who has previously served as president could draw on that experience to tackle national challenges, including unemployment, economic hardship and governance concerns.

Nevertheless, the suggestion has attracted differing opinions. Those opposed to a third term argue that presidential term limits are essential for preventing the excessive accumulation of political power and maintaining democratic accountability.

Advocates of reviewing the restriction contend that citizens should be allowed to choose their preferred leader if they believe the individual has performed well in office.

Meanwhile, no formal announcement has been indicated that Mahama intends to seek a third term. Any such move would depend on a valid constitutional amendment permitting an additional term.

Omanhene’s statement has further fuelled discussions about presidential tenure, constitutional change and the principles guiding Ghana’s democratic system.
