Deepening Quagmire

Deepening Quagmire

As the conflict between Saudi Arabia, the Houthis and Yemen’s competing factions intensifies, the already narrow margins available to those seeking peace are shrinking further. What was already a complicated war is rapidly becoming a regional confrontation with consequences far beyond Yemen’s borders.

The latest Houthi attacks on Saudi airports, the kingdom’s retaliatory strikes and the expanding maritime confrontation in the Red Sea have brought the conflict into increasingly dangerous territory.

For Pakistan, the implications are particularly troubling. Islamabad is being drawn ever deeper into this quagmire, and if the present trajectory continues, it may not be long before its commitments under the Makkah Defence Alliance require military action.

Pakistani troops have maintained a presence in Saudi Arabia for decades. That relationship is nothing new. What is new, however, is the prospect of this longstanding defence arrangement becoming an obligation to participate in an expanding regional war.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s latest statements, alongside those of other government officials, suggest that any such intervention must first pass through the alliance’s Strategic Political and Defence Committee. Yet with rapid military deployments already agreed upon, the distinction between deterrence and active involvement is becoming increasingly precarious.

Pakistan must honour its commitments to Saudi Arabia, but it must also recognise the dangers of becoming entangled in Yemen’s fractured conflict.

Diplomacy and de-escalation must remain the priority, and the alliance’s defensive character must be preserved.

These are troubling times indeed. The longer this conflict continues, the narrower Pakistan’s room for manoeuvre becomes, until decisions of sovereign judgement risk becoming obligations dictated by events.
