Sunbeth Energies launches self-service fuelling stations across the country

At Sunbeth Energies’ Ogba station in Lagos, refuelling your vehicle looks less like handing money to an attendant and more like checking out at a self-service till. Customers can initiate payment, get authorisation, and monitor the fuelling process themselves. The station launched on July 27, 2026, following a pilot that began in June. A second self-service station opened at Wuse, Abuja, on September 21, 2026.

The system, called StationMag, was developed through a partnership between Sunbeth Energies and Tech Brokers Limited, integrating a customer-facing platform with payment processing and forecourt pump technology. Sunbeth says earlier attempts at self-service fuelling in Nigeria struggled because they were not adapted to the country’s specific payment, forecourt and operational environment, though the company did not name which prior attempts it was referring to.

StationMag, by contrast, is designed to work across different payment rails and forecourt technologies, positioning it to expand across Sunbeth’s wider retail network rather than remain a single-station pilot.

“By launching a self-service fuel station in Nigeria, we are introducing a new standard of transparency, convenience and customer empowerment,” said Lateef Abioye, Managing Director of Sunbeth Energies. “Every customer deserves to know exactly what they are paying for, and this innovation gives them that confidence.”

Self-service fuelling is new enough to Nigeria’s downstream sector that the regulatory picture is still being worked out. Sunbeth says the Ogba station operates in line with applicable petroleum retail regulations, and received permission to run the pilot phase, but the company is still engaging with the NMDPRA to secure formal regulatory sign-off specific to self-service operation. That distinction matters: this is a station operating under pilot approval while the sign-off process for the model itself continues.

On safety, while the station remains digitally controlled, it is not unattended. Trained customer assistants are stationed on the forecourt to guide first-time users and intervene where needed, alongside the standard safety infrastructure and emergency procedures required of petroleum retail sites.

Since launch, Sunbeth says the Ogba station has processed more than 40,000 transactions, accounting for over 500,000 litres sold, with the company reporting a 100% success rate

Sunbeth Energies was established in 2023, starting with a door-to-door diesel delivery service before expanding into fuel retail in 2024. By 2025, the company operated 41 stations across 12 states. It now runs more than 80 stations across 21 states, with the Ogba and Wuse stations in Abuja marking its entry into self-service.
