The Miners have endured a difficult start to their campaign and are yet to record a home victory this season. They will be hoping to turn their fortunes around at Dun’s Park, a venue where they have enjoyed considerable success in previous seasons.
Head coach Petros Koukouras has expressed his disappointment with the team’s performances so far, even suggesting that a “magic stick” would be needed to change their situation.
Gold Stars currently occupy 15th position on the league table with four points from their opening five matches. Having finished as runners-up last season, the Bibiani-based club will be under pressure to improve their results if they are to mount another serious challenge near the top of the standings.
However, Sunday’s opponents, Basake Holy Stars, arrive with greater confidence following their recent victory over Berekum Chelsea.
The visitors secured a narrow home win last weekend and will be aiming to build on that result by recording consecutive victories for the first time this season.
Under head coach Abdulai Gazale, Holy Stars have collected nine points from five matches, placing them fifth on the league table. Their tally gives them a five-point advantage over Gold Stars ahead of the encounter.
Despite their encouraging league position, the Basake-based side are also searching for their first away victory of the campaign.
Their previous trips to Dun’s Park, however, have been particularly challenging. Holy Stars have lost every league encounter they have played at the Bibiani venue since earning promotion to Ghana’s top flight.
That record could provide Gold Stars with some encouragement as they seek to revive their campaign in front of their home supporters.
Nevertheless, the hosts will need a significant improvement in performance to overcome an opponent who has made a stronger start to the season.
With Gold Stars eager to end their disappointing run and Basake Holy Stars determined to maintain their upward momentum, Sunday’s fixture presents an important test for both teams as the Ghana Premier League campaign gathers pace.
