Eric Opoku Announces Major Progress on Bechem Meat Factory as 2027 Opening Draws Closer
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that construction work on the Bechem Meat Processing Factory is 50 percent complete, with operations expected to commence by the end of the first quarter of 2027. He made this disclosure during President John Mahama’s tour of the facility.
According to the Minister, the factory will be equipped with two separate production lines—one dedicated to broilers and the other to layers. Together, these lines will give the facility a combined processing capacity of 6,000 birds per hour, a significant boost to Ghana’s poultry processing capability.
The update on the project’s progress came as President Mahama inspected the site as part of his tour, underscoring the government’s interest in the development of the country’s agricultural value chain. The Bechem Meat Processing Factory is expected to play a key role in enhancing local processing of poultry products and reducing dependence on imported meat.
Once completed, the facility is projected to handle thousands of birds every hour, which could improve efficiency in the poultry industry and create opportunities for farmers, processors, and traders. The project also aligns with broader efforts to modernise agriculture and promote value addition within Ghana.
The Minister’s remarks indicate that the project remains on schedule, with the remaining work expected to be completed ahead of the operational start date in the first quarter of 2027. Stakeholders in the agricultural sector will be watching closely as the factory moves toward completion.
The tour by President Mahama highlights the government’s continued focus on agricultural infrastructure as a driver of economic growth and food security.
