Teacher Unions Suspend Strike, Direct Members To Return To Classrooms On Monday

The three teacher unions in Ghana have suspended their industrial action following a meeting with the Council of State and other government representatives on Friday, October 9, 2026. The decision brings relief to students and parents affected by the disruption of academic activities in pre-tertiary institutions.

According to a report by JoyNews on October 9, 2026, the unions have directed their members to return to the classrooms on Monday, October 12, 2026, paving the way for teaching and learning to resume in first- and second-cycle institutions across the country.

The suspension follows discussions involving the Council of State, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). The engagements were aimed at resolving the concerns that led the unions to embark on the strike.

The issues at the centre of the industrial action include concerns over the collective agreement, deprived-area allowances and outstanding promotion-related payments. These matters have been key demands raised by the unions in their engagements with the government.

Speaking after a meeting with the unions, the Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, described the discussions as positive. He explained that the government had been working with relevant institutions to address the concerns, particularly the delays associated with promotion payments.

According to the minister, a team involving the Ghana Education Service and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department had been working to resolve the promotion-related issues. He disclosed that, as of Thursday, October 8, approximately 64,000 teachers had been entered into the system and confirmed by the Controller.

The suspension of the strike marks an important step towards restoring normal academic activities in affected schools. However, the progress made in addressing the unions’ demands will remain crucial to ensuring lasting industrial peace and preventing further disruptions to teaching and learning.
