Eric Opoku Drops Big Poultry Figures as Nkoko Nketenkete Drives Production from 4.6% to 22%

Ghana’s domestic poultry production has recorded a remarkable surge, rising from 4.6% to 22% within a single year following the rollout of the Nkoko Nketenkete programme, according to Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku. The announcement highlights what many see as a major breakthrough in the country’s quest to reduce dependence on imported chicken and strengthen local food security.

The Nkoko Nketenkete programme, which translates loosely as “small chicken” or “little fowl,” was introduced as part of the government’s broader strategy to revitalize the poultry sector. The initiative focuses on supporting small-scale and backyard poultry farmers, providing them with inputs, training, and market access to boost output. By targeting grassroots producers, the programme aims to create a sustainable supply chain that can meet growing domestic demand.

Speaking at an event to assess the programme’s progress, Minister Eric Opoku expressed satisfaction with the results, noting that the jump from 4.6% to 22% in local production represents a significant shift in the poultry industry’s trajectory. He explained that the increase means a larger share of chicken consumed in Ghana is now produced locally, easing pressure on the country’s import bill and creating income opportunities for thousands of farmers.

The Minister attributed the success to the collaborative efforts of farmers, extension officers, and private sector partners who embraced the initiative. He also indicated that the government plans to scale up the programme further, with additional support for hatcheries, feed production, and cold chain infrastructure.

Industry watchers have welcomed the development, noting that Ghana has long struggled with low domestic poultry output despite high demand. Increased local production could reduce the influx of frozen chicken imports, conserve foreign exchange, and support rural livelihoods.

Opoku urged more farmers to participate in the programme, assuring them of continued government backing. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to policies that promote self-sufficiency in food production, with poultry identified as a key pillar of the national agricultural transformation agenda.

The Nkoko Nketenkete programme now stands as a flagship example of how targeted interventions can yield measurable gains in agricultural output within a short period.
