Kalonzo Finally Speaks on Working With Ruto After His Meeting With UDA Official
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has restated his commitment to opposition politics following renewed speculation about his political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The questions emerged after Kalonzo held a private meeting with former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman Johnson Muthama on Thursday evening, October 1. The encounter prompted speculation over whether the two had discussed a possible political arrangement involving President William Ruto and his administration.
Muthama later described the meeting as a consultation on national matters affecting Kenyans. He did not publicly indicate that the discussions had resulted in a political agreement.
Wiper chairman Jamleck Kamau has also rejected suggestions that Kalonzo could support Ruto’s re-election or join an arrangement with the government. Kamau maintained that the party remains committed to cooperation with other opposition formations as preparations for the 2027 presidential contest continue.
Kalonzo has separately addressed comments in which he referred to Ruto as his “brother,” remarks that had generated discussion within political circles. On September 30, the former Vice President explained that the description was based on his Christian belief that Kenyans should regard one another as brothers. He clarified that the statement was not intended to signal support for Ruto or his administration.
The Wiper leader reiterated his opposition position on Saturday while attending the burial of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, the father of former Justice Minister Martha Karua, in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County.
The funeral brought together several prominent opposition figures, including retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.
During the event, Kalonzo cautioned opposition politicians against acting as political “moles” for the government and called for unity as parties prepare for the next election.
At present, there is no public evidence that Kalonzo’s meeting with Muthama produced a political agreement with Ruto’s camp. Wiper continues to state that it intends to cooperate with other opposition parties as Kenya approaches the August 2027 General Election.
