Oburu Oginga Health Update: ODM Breaks Silence After Fresh Nairobi Hospital Reports

Oburu Oginga Health Update: ODM Breaks Silence After Fresh Nairobi Hospital Reports

Oburu Oginga’s health has once again become a major topic of discussion after reports emerged that the ODM party leader had visited Nairobi Hospital, triggering fresh speculation about his condition.

The latest development came on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale addressed reports circulating on social media and in sections of the media about the veteran politician’s health.

Etale said Oburu was well and had gone to Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical check-up. He said he had spoken to Oburu on Monday evening and there was no immediate cause for alarm.

According to Etale, the Siaya Senator was not rushed to hospital as had been suggested in some reports. He urged Kenyans to verify information before sharing reports concerning the politician’s health.

The latest clarification followed a report published on Monday claiming that Oburu had been admitted again to Nairobi Hospital, where he was said to have been receiving treatment since Saturday. The report, citing a hospital source, said the veteran politician was being treated for a chronic illness.

The reports came only weeks after Oburu travelled to the United Kingdom for medical attention.

On September 10, Oburu confirmed that he was in the UK for a routine medical check-up after receiving advice from his doctors and ODM leadership. He said the trip was intended not only for medical assessment but also to give him time to rest and recuperate.

Oburu also sought to reassure ODM supporters that his temporary absence would not interfere with the running of the party, saying the movement had established structures capable of handling its affairs.

While in the UK, concerns about his health continued to attract public attention. His sister, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, later said Oburu had improved but was still undergoing medical appointments. She clarified that he was not admitted to hospital but was staying close to the medical facility so that he could easily attend appointments and be seen by doctors.

Reports from the UK also indicated that Oburu remained active despite his medical programme. He was seen in London and continued engaging with visitors and political figures.

Oburu eventually returned to Kenya, with Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga saying on October 5 that she had visited him and found him recovering. Wanga said the ODM leader remained engaged in party affairs despite taking time away from intense public activities.

She also urged Kenyans and ODM supporters to give him time to regain his strength.

The latest health concerns are not the first to surround Oburu this year. Earlier in September, he had also been linked to a hospital visit in Nairobi. At the time, he dismissed reports suggesting that he had been seriously ill, explaining that he had visited Nairobi Hospital for a general medical check-up.

Before travelling to the UK, Oburu also spoke publicly about an earlier illness that had resulted in hospitalisation. He said he had initially been admitted after falling sick and was later admitted again after becoming unwell following a golf outing in Kisumu. He said he was discharged and continued recovering at home.

His recent health challenges have attracted particular attention because of his position within ODM. Oburu became the party’s leader following the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025.

Since then, he has played a central role in guiding the party through a politically difficult period marked by internal disagreements and preparations for the 2027 General Election.

Oburu has also previously referred to himself as “Youth Leader,” a nickname that has become closely associated with him. President William Ruto used the same description when recounting his final conversation with Oburu on the morning Raila Odinga died.

Despite the renewed speculation surrounding his health, the latest information available does not confirm reports that Oburu Oginga has died.

In fact, the latest statement from ODM’s communications director directly contradicts the death claim. Etale said Oburu is okay, confirmed that he spoke with him on Monday evening and explained that the politician is expected to temporarily reduce his political activities as he continues recovering.

The contradictory reports highlight the danger of relying on unverified social media posts when dealing with sensitive information about a person’s health.

For now, the confirmed position from ODM is that Oburu Oginga is alive, has recently been to Nairobi Hospital for a medical check-up and is taking time to recover before returning fully to his political activities.

Any claim announcing his death should therefore be treated as unverified unless it is confirmed by his family, ODM or another authoritative source.
