Apple replaces iPhone 18 Pro Max phones that lose cellular service
Apple is offering free replacements to some iPhone 18 Pro Max owners affected by a serious cellular connectivity issue on AT&T’s network that can prevent devices from making calls, including emergency 911 calls.
The issue appears to be limited to iPhone 18 Pro Max models using AT&T in the US. Reports of lost cellular connectivity emerged last week, with estimates suggesting thousands of customers could be affected.
Apple released iOS 27.0.1 alongside a separate carrier-settings update on Friday in an effort to prevent the issue from affecting additional devices.
However, the updates do not appear to restore connectivity on iPhone 18 Pro Max devices that have already developed the problem.
According to reports, Apple and AT&T are instead providing affected customers with replacement iPhone 18 Pro Max units at no cost.
Customers experiencing the connectivity problem have been advised to contact Apple or AT&T support.
Some affected users have reported that installing iOS 27.0.1 did not restore cellular service. Reports also suggest that upgrading to the iOS 27.2 public beta did not resolve the issue for some devices.
For now, the problem appears to be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T.
There have been no similar reports involving T-Mobile or Verizon, while the standard iPhone 18 Pro on AT&T does not appear to be affected.
The difference in modem hardware between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could be relevant to the problem.
The US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem, while the iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s C2 modem.
An iFixit teardown also identified a new millimeter-wave antenna in the iPhone 18 Pro Max. TechInsights has reported that the X80 modem is also used in Apple’s previous-generation iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
However, it remains unclear whether the modem, the new antenna or another component is responsible for the connectivity failure. Qualcomm has not publicly commented on the issue.
For iPhone 18 Pro Max owners who have not experienced the problem, Apple says the software and carrier-settings updates should help prevent the issue from affecting additional devices.
