Packers Abruptly Terminate Contract of 25-Year-Old Defender
The Green Bay Packers have released 25-year-old defensive back Marlon Jones with an injury settlement, ending a brief stay that never reached a regular-season snap, via the NFL transaction wire.
Jones, an undrafted rookie out of Vanderbilt, was waived/injured on August 9 after an undisclosed injury in training camp. He cleared waivers and reverted to injured reserve the next day, where he remained until Monday’s transaction.
The Packers signed Jones on May 19, with general manager Brian Gutekunst announcing the deal.
Listed at 6-foot, 190 pounds, he was assigned No. 46. He arrived as depth in a cornerback room that also included free-agent addition Benjamin St-Juste and draft picks Brandon Cisse and Domani Jackson.
ESPN’s Rob Demovsky noted that Jones had made some plays early in camp before the injury.
His path to Green Bay was unusual. Jones played at Eastern Washington from 2019 to 2023, then transferred to Vanderbilt for 2025 after missing the entire 2024 season while battling cancer.
The Packers said he appeared in 51 games with 30 starts across those stops, totaling 168 tackles (95 solo), nine interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), seven tackles for loss, a sack, 23 passes defensed and a forced fumble.
He also returned two kickoffs for 62 yards.
At Eastern Washington in 2023, he posted an 84.3 coverage grade, according to Pro Football Focus, and allowed a passer rating of 49.2 into his coverage.
His 2025 season at Vanderbilt was quieter: nine games and nine tackles, with no interceptions or pass breakups, in limited snaps after returning from treatment.
Pre-draft testing had marked him as an athletic prospect. Dane Brugler ranked him outside the top 200 cornerbacks, but reported a 4.50-second 40-yard dash, a 39-inch vertical and a Relative Athletic Score of 8.26.
Born August 19, 2001, in Tacoma, Washington, Jones turned 25 during camp. He recorded no NFL statistics.
The settlement closes the books on a roster flyer that never developed past August.
For Jones, the next step is free agency once he is healthy; for Green Bay, the move simply clears an IR spot that had been occupied since the first week of camp.
