Government is targeting the production of 18 million birds this year
The government is set to roll out a major poultry initiative in October with the establishment of a large-scale poultry estate aimed at boosting local production and creating jobs for Ghana’s youth.
Kelvin Ocran, National Coordinator for the National Broiler Project Directorate under the Office of the Minister of State for Special Initiatives, said the estate will house three million birds in a single facility, complete with a modern processing plant, cold storage systems, and expansive warehousing infrastructure.
He noted that Ghana consumes nearly 400,000 metric tonnes of poultry annually, presenting a significant market opportunity while helping to reduce the country’s poultry import bill.
“We have what we call the poultry estates, which we are looking forward to rolling out around October, where we will have about three million birds in one facility. This will include a processing plant, a cold blast system, and large storage facilities,” he said.

“Beyond that, people often ask where the market is. Ghana consumes almost 400,000 metric tonnes of poultry, and that is a huge market,” he added.
To make poultry products more accessible, Ocran said the Directorate has introduced a deferred payment scheme targeted at corporate workers.
Under the arrangement, workers can purchase a 10-kilogram box of chicken at GH¢600 and pay in instalments over a three-month period.
Beyond poultry production, the government is also piloting agricultural projects at Darko Farms and Aglow Farm, which currently employ about 200 workers per production cycle.
Plans are underway to expand operations at Aglow Farm from 200 to 600 workers per cycle under the government’s 24-hour economy policy.
Meanwhile, under the ‘Nkoko Nkitinkiti’ project, the government is targeting the production of 18 million birds this year.
Introduced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in 2025, the programme seeks to revitalise poultry production nationwide, reduce dependence on imports, strengthen food security, and create jobs.
The initiative aims to empower 55,000 households to engage in egg and poultry production, thereby supporting livelihoods and boosting the national economy.
