Expect Heavy Morning and Afternoon Rains for the Next 24 Hours if You Live in These Areas

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in 11 counties over the next 24 hours, with some areas likely to experience showers and thunderstorms.

The forecast covers the period from 9pm on Monday, October 5, to 9pm on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Kenya Met expects light to moderate rainfall in Kisumu, Siaya, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Marsabit.

The department has also warned of strong winds in parts of Turkana, Samburu and Marsabit. Southerly to southeasterly winds could exceed 25 knots, equivalent to about 12.5 metres per second.

Northern Kenya is expected to experience some of the most active weather conditions. Wajir and Mandera could receive moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms, with temperatures reaching highs of 33°C and 34°C respectively.

Marsabit may record isolated light showers and thunderstorms, while temperatures could reach about 26°C. Isiolo is expected to remain warmer, with a projected maximum temperature of 33°C.

Several counties in eastern Kenya are likely to experience partly cloudy conditions. Meru, Tharaka-Nithi and Embu could record maximum temperatures of between 27°C and 28°C, while Kitui and Makueni may reach 31°C and 32°C respectively.

In Nairobi, partly cloudy conditions are expected before periods of sunshine develop during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures in the capital are forecast to range from a low of 16°C to a high of 27°C.

Parts of the Rift Valley are also expected to experience partly cloudy weather. Nakuru, Narok and Kajiado could reach maximum temperatures of about 28°C, while Kericho may record a high of approximately 26°C.

The Lake Victoria region could receive rainfall during the forecast period. Kisumu may experience light showers in the morning, with the possibility of rain continuing into the afternoon.

Siaya and Bungoma could receive light afternoon showers, while Busia may also experience rainfall later in the day. Kakamega is expected to record a maximum temperature of 31°C, while Migori could reach 32°C and Nyamira about 27°C.

The forecast comes as Kenya continues preparations for the October-December rainfall season, with Nairobi and other flood-prone areas putting measures in place to reduce the risks associated with heavy rainfall and flooding.
