Today’s Headlines: Yoruba Started Home Video, Not Nollywood — Osuofia; Soludo Celebrates Ibeto at 74
Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, clarified that Yoruba filmmakers pioneered Nigeria’s home-video industry, not Nollywood. Speaking on Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by comedian Bae U, he explained that the name Nollywood was adopted years after filmmakers had begun producing films.
Owoh credited veteran filmmakers Hubert Ogunde and Adebayo for popularising home-video productions, stressing that Yoruba filmmakers played a significant role in its development. However, he distinguished between the origins of home video and Nollywood, while acknowledging that the 1992 Igbo-language film Living in Bondage, produced by Kenneth Nnebue, helped drive the commercial expansion of the industry.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted large consignments of suspected illicit drugs concealed inside imported sofas and women’s traditional headgears. The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, shared videos of the discoveries on Sunday, November 8, 2026, showing operatives removing sealed packages hidden within furniture padding and the linings of head wraps.
Babafemi described the seizures as some of the agency’s recent discoveries, highlighting the increasingly sophisticated methods used by drug traffickers to evade detection. The operation formed part of the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks that exploit everyday consumer goods and personal belongings to conceal and transport illegal substances.
All Progressives Congress chieftain and North Central Development Commission member, Dr Atinuke Owolabi, has mobilised voters in Ekiti State to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election and Senator Opeyemi Bamidele in the January 16, 2027 elections. She made the appeal during a voter education exercise in Aramoko Ekiti, where she unveiled a handbook to educate residents on voting procedures and prevent invalid ballots.
Owolabi disclosed that approximately 73 per cent of registered voters in Aramoko did not participate in the 2023 presidential election, stressing the need to address voter apathy. She urged residents, particularly women, to participate actively and vote correctly, arguing that overwhelming support for Tinubu and Bamidele would attract more development to the community and Ekiti State.
