The Mayor Of Accra Has Announced A GHC1,000 Christmas Package For Some Traders
According to a report by UTV Ghana today being Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a GH¢1,000 Christmas package for traders who comply with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) red-line directive by conducting their businesses within officially designated trading areas.
The initiative forms part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to address persistent traffic congestion in the capital, particularly as commercial activities increase during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Under the arrangement, traders who respect the directive and operate within approved trading locations will be eligible to receive the GH¢1,000 package as a festive season incentive. The announcement is expected to encourage traders to support the city’s efforts to maintain order and improve movement along major roads and busy commercial centres.
The AMA has been working to tackle the challenges associated with unauthorised trading activities, which often result in the occupation of pavements, road shoulders and other spaces meant for pedestrians and motorists.
The red-line directive is intended to establish clear boundaries for commercial activities and ensure that traders do not extend their businesses into areas that obstruct the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
With the Christmas season approaching, the Assembly is expected to intensify efforts to enforce regulations and prevent the usual congestion associated with increased shopping activities.
The GH¢1,000 package announced by Mayor Allotey is therefore being presented as an incentive to encourage cooperation rather than relying solely on enforcement measures.
The initiative also highlights the Assembly’s intention to involve traders in efforts to improve sanitation, accessibility and traffic management across Accra.
Traders are consequently being encouraged to respect the designated trading boundaries and cooperate with city authorities to ensure a more organised trading environment throughout the festive period.
