Ramaphosa Reportedly Considers Resigning as ANC President. See Why
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly considered stepping down as president of the African National Congress (ANC) following the party’s disappointing performance in the November 4, 2026, local government elections.
The reported development has sparked fresh discussions within the governing party about its leadership and the need to take responsibility for its declining electoral support.
At least five senior members of the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) reportedly indicated that Ramaphosa had raised the possibility of resigning, arguing that two consecutive electoral setbacks under his leadership required serious consequences.
According to the reports, Ramaphosa was prepared to step down individually if the ANC’s top seven officials were unwilling to resign collectively and allow a new leadership team to take over.
However, the reported proposal has faced resistance from some senior party members, who have urged him to reconsider and allow the organisation time to reflect on the election results.
The ANC’s electoral performance has continued to decline in recent years. The party secured approximately 31% of the national vote in the latest local government elections, compared with 46% in 2021. It also received around 40% in the 2024 national and provincial elections.
There are also concerns that Ramaphosa’s possible departure from the ANC leadership could affect the Government of National Unity (GNU), particularly because he currently serves as South Africa’s president.
Meanwhile, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has stressed that responsibility for the election defeat should be shared by the entire party leadership rather than placed on one individual.
The ANC’s National Executive Committee is reviewing the election results as the party faces difficult coalition negotiations in several municipalities where it failed to secure an outright majority.
For now, Ramaphosa remains ANC president, but the reported resignation discussions have intensified questions about the party’s leadership and political future.
