President Ramaphosa to attend election results announcement ceremony

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to attend the announcement of the final results of South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections at the IEC National Results Operations Centre at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has scheduled the announcement for 6pm on Sunday, with the ceremony expected to be broadcast live.

South Africans went to the polls on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, to elect representatives who will serve in municipal councils across the country. Special voting took place on November 2 and 3, allowing eligible voters who could not vote on election day to participate in the electoral process.

The elections gave registered voters an opportunity to choose local leaders they believe can improve service delivery, address community challenges and strengthen municipal governance.

According to the Presidency, Ramaphosa will attend the ceremony in his official capacity as President of the Republic of South Africa and deliver brief remarks.

His attendance comes as political parties and voters await the final outcome of the closely watched local government elections.

The announcement is expected to provide a clearer picture of how political parties performed across municipalities and which parties are likely to take control of councils.

The IEC’s declaration will also set the stage for the formation of municipal administrations and possible coalition negotiations in councils where no party secures an outright majority.
