Peasant Farmer Association Demand Non-Negotiable 10% Agricultural Allocation in 2027 National Budget

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana has called on the government to allocate at least 10 per cent of the 2027 national budget to the agricultural sector, describing the proposed funding as a non-negotiable requirement for improving food production and supporting farmers.

The association is urging the government to prioritise agriculture in the upcoming budget, arguing that adequate investment is necessary to address the challenges confronting farmers and strengthen Ghana’s food security.

According to the association, agriculture remains a major contributor to the country’s economy and provides livelihoods for millions of Ghanaians, particularly those living in rural communities.

It believes that allocating less than 10 per cent of the national budget to the sector would undermine efforts to increase agricultural productivity, improve farmers’ incomes and reduce the country’s dependence on imported food.

The association is also expected to push for increased government investment in essential agricultural infrastructure, including irrigation facilities, storage systems, mechanisation and improved access to affordable farm inputs.

It has further emphasised the need for stronger support for smallholder farmers, who constitute a significant portion of Ghana’s agricultural workforce but continue to face challenges such as high production costs, limited access to credit, unpredictable weather conditions and post-harvest losses.

The demand also reflects concerns about the impact of climate change on agricultural activities and the need to strengthen farmers’ resilience through modern farming techniques and reliable irrigation systems.

The Peasant Farmers Association believes that increased budgetary allocation would help the government create an enabling environment for local food production, improve agricultural value chains and generate employment opportunities.

The call comes as the government prepares its 2027 national budget, which is expected to outline its spending priorities and economic policies for the coming year.

The association is therefore urging the government and Parliament to ensure that agriculture receives the financial commitment required to transform the sector and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
