Immigration Comptroller-General Leads Peace Talks in Hamile After Deadly Border Clashes

According to a report by MyJoyOnline published on November 8, 2026, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Samuel Basintale, has led a peace dialogue in Hamile in the Upper West Region following a deadly border explosion and subsequent clashes between residents and security personnel.

The intervention was aimed at restoring calm and rebuilding trust between the local community and security agencies after the November 3 incident along an unauthorised route known as Mountain Back 2. The incident involved a tricycle allegedly carrying dynamite and resulted in fatalities, including an immigration officer, while subsequent confrontations left 11 civilians injured.

During the visit, Samuel Basintale first met members of the Upper West Regional Security Council for a briefing before proceeding to Hamile. He was also briefed by the Hamile Centre Commander, Chief Superintendent Mohammed Abdul Mananu, on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Community leaders acknowledged the tensions and appealed for measures to ease the difficulties residents were facing. Chairman of the Hamile Development Committee, Ibrahim Mohammed, apologised on behalf of the community and called for the clearance of cargo trucks stranded at the border.

Traditional leaders and youth representatives also appealed for the curfew to be lifted and urged immigration officers to exercise greater patience when dealing with residents and travellers.

Samuel Basintale called on both residents and security personnel to prioritise dialogue over confrontation. He also raised concerns about the use of unauthorised routes to smuggle weapons and drugs, including Tramadol, into the area.

Addressing complaints about the conduct of some officers, he acknowledged that prolonged postings could encourage complacency and promised to transfer personnel who had overstayed their assignments.

He further announced plans to introduce a Community Engagement and Policing initiative in the region and pledged to help clear the backlog of cargo trucks.

The Comptroller-General also promised to recommend the lifting of the curfew to the Minister of the Interior by Monday, provided community leaders could guarantee sustained peace.

Meanwhile, a security official disclosed that nine of the 11 injured civilians had been discharged and scheduled for medical reviews. The curfew remained in force, while security personnel continued operations in the area.

The peace engagement ended with a visit to the site of the explosion at Mountain Back 2.
