Mt Kenya MP Asks Ruto for Shoes, Opens Up About His Humble Family Background

Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia has publicly declared his support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid in the 2027 General Election. He made the announcement through a Facebook post featuring a photograph of the President attending his daughter Charlene’s wedding in Tanzania.

Kururia stated that his single vote would go to Ruto when Kenyans return to the ballot. He then made a humorous request, asking the Head of State to give him his shoes whenever he becomes tired of wearing them. The legislator explained the unusual appeal by saying he was born into a poor family. He also accompanied his message with the hashtag Tutam, which supports Ruto serving another term.

The photograph showed Ruto seated outdoors in a patterned maroon jacket, white shirt and black bow tie. He completed his appearance with a cream fedora, dark sunglasses and a walking stick. The picture was taken during Charlene’s wedding to Tanzanian entrepreneur Isaya Yunge at Malaika Beach Hotel in Mwanza on November 6. The President attended the ceremony alongside First Lady Rachel Ruto.

Kururia represents Gatundu North as an independent Member of Parliament after winning the constituency seat in the 2022 General Election. Before joining the National Assembly, he served as the Member of County Assembly for Biashara Ward in Ruiru. He has frequently spoken about his humble background and the difficult circumstances surrounding his upbringing.

The lawmaker is the eldest of six children born to a mother who worked picking tea and a father employed as a cook. He previously described how playing the piano in church helped him develop skills before entering the car importation business. His journey from those beginnings into business and politics has featured in several public accounts.

Kururia’s Facebook message attracted more than 100 likes and dozens of comments shortly after publication. His endorsement adds to declarations of support for Ruto as political alliances gradually take shape ahead of 2027. Despite openly backing the President, Kururia continues serving Parliament as an independent legislator.
