Makueni KCSE Candidate Appeals for Government Help to Complete Exams After Bicycle Accident
A 17 year old Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate from Makueni County has appealed to the government to help her complete her national examinations from her hospital bed after a bicycle accident disrupted her examination schedule.
Abigail Mbithe, a student at Ngaikini Secondary School in Kibwezi Sub County, is receiving treatment at Makindu Sub County Hospital following injuries she sustained after falling off a bicycle while returning from a posho mill.
According to reports, the accident happened on a Friday. Mbithe remained at home for two days before being taken to hospital on Sunday, where she was admitted for treatment.
Despite her condition, the candidate managed to sit for her Monday examination paper after examination officials delivered it to the hospital. However, she says no subsequent examination papers have been brought to her, leaving her unable to continue with the remaining tests.
Mbithe is now appealing to the relevant government and examination authorities to make arrangements that will enable her to complete the examinations from hospital.
She maintains that she is determined to continue with her education despite the injuries and hopes to achieve her ambition of becoming a nurse.
The situation has been made more difficult by another accident involving her mother, Miriam Muteti, who was also admitted to Makindu Sub County Hospital after sustaining injuries in a separate road accident while travelling home from visiting her daughter.
Muteti said the family was informed that Mbithe would have to return to Ngaikini Secondary School to continue sitting her examinations, rather than have the papers delivered to the hospital.
However, the mother’s concern is that her daughter’s medical condition makes returning to school difficult.
The family is therefore seeking intervention to ensure that the candidate does not lose the opportunity to complete her national examinations because of circumstances arising from the accident.
Beatrice Sironga, the Director of Education for Kibwezi Sub County, confirmed that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) was handling Mbithe’s situation as an emergency case.
According to the report, Sironga explained that logistical difficulties, including the cost of fuel, transportation of examination materials and the availability of authorised personnel to supervise examinations outside registered examination centres, had complicated efforts to facilitate the candidate.
The family is hopeful that the relevant authorities will find a way to accommodate Mbithe’s situation and allow her to sit the remaining papers while continuing to receive medical care.
For the 17 year old, completing her KCSE examinations remains an important step towards pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse.
