Messi sets new record
Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has secured the MLS Golden Boot for the second consecutive season after finishing the regular campaign as the league’s leading goalscorer.
The Argentine superstar reached the milestone on Saturday as Inter Miami settled for a 3-3 draw against Charlotte in their final regular-season fixture.
Although Messi failed to score on the day, he played an important role in Miami’s performance by providing assists for the team’s opening two goals at Nu Stadium.
The result saw the defending champions finish second in the Eastern Conference standings, securing home-field advantage for the opening two rounds of the MLS playoffs.
Messi finished the campaign with 26 goals, becoming the first player in MLS history to win the Golden Boot in consecutive seasons.
FC Dallas forward Petar Musa finished second in the scoring standings with 22 goals. He was unable to add to his tally during his side’s 3-1 home victory over Colorado on the final day of the regular season.
Messi’s latest achievement further strengthens his remarkable individual record in Major League Soccer since arriving in the United States.
