Mbalula Says He Sent Ntuli to Nkandla to Discuss Coalition With Zuma And He Played Him Maskandi
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has claimed that former president Jacob Zuma did not engage in coalition discussions with the party following the 2024 general elections, despite an attempt by the ANC to initiate negotiations.
According to Mbalula, the ANC dispatched its senior leader, Mdumiseni Ntuli, to Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal to meet Zuma and explore the possibility of establishing coalition arrangements.
However, Mbalula alleges that the anticipated political discussions did not take place. Instead, Zuma reportedly spent the day playing Maskandi music for Ntuli, leaving the meeting without any meaningful engagement on coalition negotiations.
The claims offer an account of the difficulties the ANC allegedly encountered in attempting to establish communication with Zuma and his political movement after the elections.
The 2024 general elections significantly altered South Africa’s political landscape, with the ANC losing its parliamentary majority for the first time since the advent of democracy in 1994.
The electoral outcome forced the governing party to pursue coalition partnerships and eventually establish a Government of National Unity (GNU).
Zuma, who subsequently became a prominent figure in the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), emerged as a key political rival to the ANC, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mbalula’s account highlights the reportedly strained relationship between the ANC and Zuma during the post-election coalition discussions.
The allegations have not been independently verified.
