Mahama Announces $9 Billion Investment Plan for Ghana – Here Are the Sectors to Benefit

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to invest more than $9 billion in sectors with significant job creation potential between 2027 and 2030 under a new economic policy known as the New Economy.

The initiative is expected to be detailed in the 2027 national budget, which Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson is scheduled to present to Parliament on Thursday, November 12, 2026.

Speaking at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival on Saturday, November 7, President Mahama said the proposed investment formed part of his government’s broader strategy to expand economic opportunities and create sustainable employment across the country.

He explained that the next phase of the administration’s development agenda would prioritise improving access to decent and sustainable livelihoods for Ghanaians.

Mahama indicated that the Volta Region would be among the major beneficiaries of the New Economy initiative, particularly through investments in textiles, garment manufacturing, commercial agriculture, hospitality and tourism.

He identified these sectors as having considerable potential to stimulate economic growth, attract investment and generate employment opportunities within the region.

The President also acknowledged ongoing development projects across various districts, including the construction of healthcare facilities, classroom blocks and feeder roads, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund.

He attributed the increased resources available to local assemblies to a directive issued after he assumed office, requiring that at least 80 per cent of the District Assemblies Common Fund be transferred directly to district administrations.

According to him, the arrangement is intended to strengthen local authorities’ capacity to implement development projects and address infrastructure needs within their respective communities.
