Flamingos Receive $50,000 Gift After Historic World Cup Victory

Nigeria’s Flamingos have received a $50,000 cash gift following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The reward was presented by Alhaji Saleh Ahmadu, a sponsor of the National Sports Commission (NSC), during a special reception held for the victorious team in Rabat on Saturday night.

The reception was hosted by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade. The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, was also among those present.

Ahmadu rewarded the players and officials with the cash gift in recognition of their commitment and performance throughout the competition.

The Flamingos made history on Saturday, November 7, by defeating Japan 2-1 in the final to become the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 39th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead two minutes into the second half. Japan pulled one back through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, but Nigeria held on to secure the trophy.

There was also positive news concerning the team’s outstanding bonuses. The Presidency, through the National Sports Commission, facilitated payment of the bonuses and allowances owed to the players and officials for their campaign, from the preliminary qualifying rounds to the final.

The financial recognition follows a remarkable achievement that has brought Nigeria and African women’s football into the history books.
