What 2023 Presidential Election Results Reveal About Tinubu, Obi, Atiku’s Strength in South-West
According to report by Vanguard on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the results of the February 25, 2023 presidential election in Lagos, Oyo and Osun states showed how political preferences differed across the three South-West states, with each producing a different winner, according to figures announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) secured victory in Lagos, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won Oyo, while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in Osun.
The presidential contest in Lagos was particularly competitive, with Obi recording 582,454 votes, representing 45.81 per cent of the total votes cast. Tinubu finished closely behind with 572,606 votes, or 45.04 per cent.
The difference between the two candidates was just 9,848 votes, making Lagos the tightest contest among the three states.
Atiku came a distant third with 75,750 votes (5.96 per cent), while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) secured 8,442 votes (0.66 per cent).
Unlike Lagos, Oyo State witnessed a comfortable victory for Tinubu, who polled 449,884 votes, representing 55.58 per cent.
Atiku came second with 182,977 votes (22.60 per cent), leaving a substantial gap of 266,907 votes between the two candidates. Obi finished third with 99,110 votes (12.24 per cent), while Kwankwaso received 4,095 votes (0.51 per cent).
In Osun, Atiku defeated Tinubu by a narrow margin, securing 354,366 votes (46.88 per cent) against the APC candidate’s 343,945 votes (45.50 per cent). The difference stood at 10,421 votes.
Obi finished third with 23,283 votes, while Kwankwaso recorded 713 votes (0.09 per cent).
A combined assessment of the three states presents a different picture from the individual victories. Although Tinubu won only Oyo, he accumulated 1,366,435 votes across the states.
Obi recorded 704,847 votes, while Atiku secured 613,093 votes. Kwankwaso finished fourth in all three states with a combined 13,250 votes.
The figures indicate that although Obi narrowly defeated Tinubu in Lagos, Tinubu’s overwhelming advantage in Oyo gave him a commanding lead in the overall tally across the three states.
