US Killings: Ghanaian Ambassador Reveals Number of Citizens Who Have Died Since He Took Office

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has raised concerns over the growing number of Ghanaian nationals killed in the US, revealing that five citizens have died under different circumstances since he assumed office.

He disclosed that most of the deaths were linked to gun violence, prompting the Ghanaian Embassy to formally communicate the country’s concerns to US authorities.

Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Smith said the embassy had issued an official statement expressing Ghana’s dissatisfaction with the situation and calling attention to the safety of its citizens in the United States.

He clarified that Ghana was not accusing the US government of failing to take appropriate action but maintained that the concerns of the Ghanaian government and its citizens needed to be formally conveyed.

The ambassador also advised Ghanaians living in the US to remain vigilant and pay closer attention to their personal safety, particularly when choosing where to live and the places they visit.

He acknowledged that it was difficult to monitor the living conditions and movements of every Ghanaian in the country, making individual caution particularly important.

Smith further revealed that he had formally written to the US State Department following the murder of Ghanaian teenager Jarvis Owusu.

According to him, the communication was intended to convey Ghana’s concerns and seek further clarification about the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.

He stressed the need for investigations to establish whether reports of bullying at the victim’s school had any connection to the killing.

He also called for the school’s cooperation with the New York Police Department as investigations into the case continue.

Meanwhile, Ghanaians residing in the United States have been urged to exercise caution and remain conscious of their surroundings amid concerns over the deaths of several Ghanaian nationals in the country.
