Accra Mayor Announces Street Closures to Give Traders Christmas Selling Space

Accra Mayor, Hon. Nii Kpakpo Allotey, has announced plans to temporarily close some streets within the Accra Central Business District (CBD) to allow traders to sell their goods ahead of the Christmas shopping season.

The initiative is expected to provide additional trading space for business owners as commercial activities gradually intensify ahead of the festive period.

Speaking about the planned arrangement, the mayor assured traders that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would make selected streets available for commercial activities, creating more opportunities for them to serve customers during the busy Christmas season.

From next week, we’re going to block some streets for you to sell on them, he stated.

The announcement has generated interest among traders, particularly those operating within the busy Accra Central Business District, where limited trading space and heavy commercial activity often create challenges for businesses.

Christmas is traditionally one of the busiest shopping periods of the year in Ghana, with traders experiencing increased demand for clothing, footwear, food items, household products and other consumer goods.

By making selected streets available for trading, the mayor appears to be seeking a temporary arrangement that will accommodate more vendors and make it easier for businesses to take advantage of the festive shopping rush.

The move could also provide opportunities for smaller traders who struggle to secure adequate selling spaces within the crowded commercial centre.

However, the planned street closures are also likely to require careful coordination, particularly regarding traffic management, pedestrian movement and access to businesses within the affected areas.

The Accra CBD is an important commercial destination, attracting shoppers, wholesalers, retailers and visitors from different parts of the country.

Consequently, any changes to traffic arrangements could have an impact on motorists, commuters and other road users who depend on the affected routes.

The AMA will therefore need to ensure that appropriate arrangements are made to minimise inconvenience while allowing traders to benefit from the initiative.

With the Christmas shopping season approaching, the mayor’s announcement signals an effort to create additional commercial opportunities and support businesses during one of the most important periods on Ghana’s retail calendar.

Traders and motorists will be watching for further details regarding the specific streets to be affected and the implementation of the arrangement.
