“They Want To Destroy Kumasi’s Economy” – Okatakyie Afrifa Fires At Mahama Government
Ghanaian social commentator Okatakyie Afrifa has criticised the proposed Kumasi Expressway project, accusing President John Dramani Mahama and his government of pursuing a plan that could weaken the economic importance of Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region.
Afrifa argued that plans to redirect commercial traffic away from the city could negatively affect businesses that depend on the movement of traders, customers and transport operators through Kumasi’s busy commercial areas.
According to him, removing major commercial roads from the town and city could have serious consequences for the local economy, particularly for traders and small businesses whose livelihoods depend on daily commercial activities.
He alleged that the government’s approach could undermine Kumasi’s position as one of Ghana’s major economic centres. However, he did not provide evidence establishing that the government intended to deliberately damage the Ashanti Region’s economy.
The proposed expressway has become a subject of public discussion, particularly regarding its potential impact on transportation, urban development and commercial activities.
Supporters of major road infrastructure projects generally point to the potential benefits of reducing traffic congestion, improving connectivity and making transportation more efficient. However, concerns have also been raised about how such developments could affect businesses and communities along existing commercial routes.
Afrifa’s comments have therefore added a political dimension to the discussion, with questions emerging about whether the project will benefit Kumasi’s long-term development or create challenges for businesses operating within the city.
The government’s intentions and the project’s expected economic impact remain important issues for public scrutiny.
As discussions continue, residents, traders and business owners will be watching closely to understand how the Kumasi Expressway could affect the city’s commercial activities and its position as a major economic hub in the Ashanti Region.
