The ANC and EFF are the 2 biggest Parties that lost the most in elections
South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections have signalled a major shift in the country’s political landscape, with the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) suffering substantial electoral setbacks, according to preliminary results.
The ANC reportedly secured approximately 1,700 council seats nationwide, down sharply from the more than 4,000 seats it won in the 2021 elections. The EFF also experienced a significant decline, with its representation falling to fewer than 200 seats compared with over 900 seats in the previous municipal elections.
The ANC’s declining support has been linked to growing voter frustration over service delivery, unemployment and governance. Many voters appear increasingly focused on practical solutions to everyday challenges rather than historical achievements and promises of transformation.
The EFF’s disappointing performance has also raised questions about its political messaging. Party leader Julius Malema previously indicated that the organisation had chosen not to appeal to voters concerned about illegal immigration, a position that may have affected its support among certain sections of the electorate.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) appears to have benefited from the changing political mood, strengthening its position in several areas.
The results point to increasing voter demands for accountability, effective governance and improved public services. However, the full implications of the electoral shift will become clearer once the final results are confirmed.
