Safaricom Introduces M-PESA Jumbe to End ‘Nionyeshe Message Yako’ at Shops
Safaricom has introduced a new M-PESA feature known as M-PESA Jumbe, aimed at making payments easier and protecting customers’ personal information.
The new service seeks to end the common situation where shop attendants ask customers to show their M-PESA confirmation messages after purchasing goods or services.
For many Kenyans, the phrase “Nionyeshe message yako” has become familiar when paying at supermarkets, restaurants, petrol stations and other businesses.
With M-PESA Jumbe, customers can now provide proof of payment without exposing their full names, phone numbers or account balances.
The feature allows business owners to nominate employees who can receive payment notifications directly on their mobile phones. This means attendants can independently confirm transactions instead of contacting the business owner whenever a customer makes a payment.
Safaricom also allows businesses to nominate up to 50 employees to receive payment alerts.
Business owners can activate the service by dialling *234# and following the instructions or through the M-PESA Business Hub.
However, the feature only works at businesses that have activated the service.
The introduction of M-PESA Jumbe is expected to improve customer privacy, reduce payment confirmation delays and make everyday transactions more convenient for Kenyans.
