Political parties urged to address constituency-level weaknesses ahead of 2028 elections
Political parties have been urged to pay closer attention to constituency-level weaknesses and public dissatisfaction as they prepare for the 2028 general elections.
The call follows new electoral projections by Global InfoAnalytics, which suggest that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could make significant parliamentary gains while the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) risks losing a substantial number of seats.
Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Musa Dankwa, said political parties needed to identify the specific factors threatening their electoral fortunes rather than relying solely on national popularity.
Speaking on ‘Current Agenda’ Your Voice, Your Power on GTV on November 7, he explained that the organisation’s constituency-level analysis could identify whether a party’s declining support was linked to the performance of an individual Member of Parliament (MP) or broader dissatisfaction with the party.
He said such distinctions were important because the solutions to the two problems were different.
According to him, where an MP’s approval rating was low but the party remained popular, changing the parliamentary candidate could improve the party’s chances.
However, where both the MP and the party had unfavourable ratings, addressing the situation would require broader political reforms.
Mr Dankwa also cautioned the NPP against attempting to reclaim constituencies it had never won before concentrating on recovering seats it previously held.
He explained that parties seeking to rebuild their parliamentary strength must first consolidate their traditional strongholds before targeting competitive constituencies.
He said the NPP’s projected gains in areas such as Bono and the Central Region suggested that the party could be recovering some of its previous electoral support.
For the NDC, he said the priority should be identifying constituencies where its support was vulnerable and addressing the factors that could lead to electoral losses.
The projections indicate that the NPP could secure 97 parliamentary seats, while the NDC could retain 153 if elections were held today.
However, Mr Dankwa stressed that the figures could change following party primaries, as the selection of new parliamentary candidates could influence voting intentions.
He said the model was continuously updated with new constituency information and should therefore be treated as a reflection of current political conditions rather than a definitive prediction of the 2028 elections.
