Itopa, popularly known as “Pharmacist” despite being a graduate of Computer Science, hailed from Ozuma, Okengwe, in Okene local government area of Kogi State.
He reportedly died on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in the Okengwe Ehi community, months after his unusual wedding ceremony attracted widespread attention on social media.
His death was made public by a Facebook user identified as MC Ajina, who confirmed his demise and shared a video of his funeral.
A relative of the deceased, Haruna Surajudeen, who spoke with our correspondent, said he was with Itopa the previous day when the deceased disclosed that his father had sent him money to purchase tiles.
According to Surajudeen, Itopa had informed him that he would be going to Okene the following day to buy the building materials.
He said he received a telephone call at about 10am on Saturday informing him that Itopa had suddenly slumped while making the purchase in Okene.
An eyewitness, Usman Idris, who recounted the incident to the deceased’s relation, said Itopa collapsed at the point of payment after purchasing the tiles.
Idris said the deceased suddenly sat down without uttering a word, adding that before he could react, Itopa began to fall, prompting him to hold him.
He said he subsequently arranged a tricycle to convey the deceased to a nearby medical facility at Iruvochinomi General Hospital, where he was immediately placed on oxygen.
According to the account, the deceased was later transferred to the Reference Hospital, Okene, after one of his relatives arrived and discovered that he had yet to be attended to by a doctor at the first facility.
Surajudeen said it was initially difficult for medical personnel to obtain Itopa’s blood pressure reading, but after administering medication, they recorded a reading of 70/30.
He said the deceased began sweating, prompting hopes that his condition was improving, before the situation suddenly deteriorated.
“He started bleeding from the mouth. We were all surprised. The doctor asked if he had been bitten by a snake, but I told them there was nothing like that. Since he arrived at the hospital, he had not been talking,” he recounted.
Surajudeen added that the medical tests conducted on the deceased reportedly returned negative results, making it difficult for the medical team to determine the cause of his condition.
He said he had briefly left the hospital to get another set of clothes for Itopa when he received a call informing him that he had died.
Efforts by our correspondent to speak with the deceased’s two wives were unsuccessful, as they were said to be still traumatised by the development.
However, family members promised to make them available for an interview when they had recovered sufficiently from the shock of their husband’s death.
