Kaizer Chiefs warned over latest transfer twist

Kaizer Chiefs have been warned against pursuing a move for former Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi, with former Buccaneers player Lebohang “Cheezboy” Mokoena questioning whether the playmaker would fit into Fernando Da Cruz’s current squad.

Maswanganyi has recently been linked with a possible return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), with reports suggesting that Amakhosi could be interested in securing his services. The midfielder left Orlando Pirates in August 2026 to join Bahraini side Al-Khaldiya SC, but speculation about his future in South African football has continued despite his move abroad.

Speaking on SoccerBeat’s Absa Football Fridays show on Friday, Mokoena explained why he believes Chiefs should avoid signing the attacking midfielder. The former Pirates star suggested that Maswanganyi might not be the type of player Da Cruz needs to strengthen his squad, insisting that Amakhosi should focus on recruiting players who offer qualities that are currently missing from the team.

The transfer speculation intensified in late October after social media reports claimed that Maswanganyi’s contract with Al-Khaldiya had been terminated. However, those claims were quickly dismissed by his representatives and sources linked to the Bahraini club. His camp maintained that he remained contracted to the club and was continuing his football career abroad.

Meanwhile, Chiefs have already strengthened their attacking options by signing Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana as a free agent following his departure from Tunisian giants Espérance. He becomes the club’s seventh new signing this season and is expected to provide additional pace and attacking width.

Da Cruz has also made it clear that any further January additions must bring genuine quality to the squad.

With Maswanganyi still contracted in Bahrain, a return to Naturena remains uncertain. For now, Chiefs appear focused on improving their squad with players who fit the coach’s tactical requirements.
