“I’ll Give the ANC One More Chance”: 18-Year-Old Voter Calls for Change in Joburg

An 18-year-old first-time voter, Yosef Sher, has explained why he chose to vote for the African National Congress (ANC) in the Local Government Elections in Johannesburg.

Sher said he understands that the city needs change, but he is still willing to give the governing party another chance to prove itself. “We need change in Johannesburg… I think I can give them one more chance,” he said.

His comment gives a glimpse into how some young people think as they vote for the first time. Not every new voter is looking for a fresh start with a different party. Some, like Sher, believe the ANC still deserves an opportunity to deal with the problems residents face. At 18, he is part of a new generation of voters whose choices could help shape the direction of Johannesburg and other municipalities across the country.

Local government elections matter because municipalities are responsible for the services people rely on every day. These include water, electricity, sanitation, refuse collection and the upkeep of roads and other public infrastructure. For many residents, how well a party handles these basics is a major factor when deciding who to support.

Johannesburg is the country’s economic hub, but it continues to struggle with serious governance and service delivery problems. Electricity, water shortages, ageing infrastructure, waste management and municipal administration have all been central to political debate in the city.

Sher’s decision shows how difficult the choice can be for voters. He accepts that change is needed, yet he still believes the ANC should get another chance. His view also shows that young voters do not all expect the same things from an election. Some want completely new leadership, while others are ready to give established parties more time.

The participation of first-time voters like Sher shows how important young people have become in South Africa’s democracy. Whether the ANC can justify the trust placed in it by some of them will depend on whether it can fix Johannesburg’s problems and make a real difference in residents’ lives.
