Helen Zille Surprises South Africans With Personal Revelation About Jacob Zuma
Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille has offered an interesting perspective on former South African president Jacob Zuma, revealing that despite their political differences, he showed her a surprisingly warm and considerate side during their personal interactions.
Zille explained that people may not fully appreciate how charming Zuma can be, based on her own experiences with him. She recalled an occasion when the former president taught her how to waltz after mentioning that he had attended dance lessons.
She also shared another memorable moment when Zuma reached out to her during the backlash surrounding her controversial 2017 remarks about the legacy of colonialism. According to Zille, Zuma contacted her and expressed concern about the criticism she was facing, telling her that the way she was being treated was unfair.
Her comments are particularly interesting because Zille has previously described Zuma as the worst president South Africa has had under democracy. Despite acknowledging his personal kindness, she has remained critical of his performance and political legacy.
Zuma’s presidency was characterised by major controversies, particularly allegations of state capture, corruption and the weakening of important public institutions. These issues remain central to how his time in office is remembered.
Zille’s account highlights the difference between someone’s personal character and their performance in public office. Being friendly, charming or considerate in private does not automatically translate into effective leadership or good governance.
Her remarks also demonstrate that political opponents can sometimes experience unexpected moments of kindness from one another, even when they strongly disagree on important issues.
Ultimately, Zille’s comments should not necessarily be interpreted as a defence of Zuma’s presidency. Rather, they offer a reminder that a person can have admirable personal qualities while leaving behind a controversial political record.
