Mashaba Warns Undocumented Immigrants: “Start Packing Your Bags”

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has issued a firm warning about illegal immigration, lawlessness and the alleged illegal occupation of properties in Johannesburg. He says his party intends to restore law and order in areas such as Hillbrow and Berea.

The message comes at a time when immigration enforcement, crime and poor living conditions in parts of the inner city are getting more political attention. In a strongly worded statement, Mashaba said undocumented foreign nationals living in Hillbrow and Berea should be ready to leave. He argued that the days of lawlessness, and of authorities looking the other way, are over. “There’s a new sheriff in town, and the message is LOUD AND CLEAR!” he said. He added that illegal immigrants in the two neighbourhoods should start packing their bags, and that illegal occupation and weak law enforcement would no longer be tolerated under ActionSA. “ActionSA will Restore Law and Order!!” he said.

The statement fits ActionSA’s long-standing focus on immigration enforcement and tougher action against the illegal occupation of buildings, especially in the inner city. Hillbrow and Berea often feature in debates about overcrowding, building safety, crime and undocumented immigration. Hijacked buildings, ageing infrastructure and illegal business activity have also put pressure on the police and city officials. Mashaba has repeatedly presented ActionSA as an alternative that would tackle these problems through stricter law enforcement, accountability and better municipal management. The party says Johannesburg residents deserve safe neighbourhoods, properly managed buildings and a firm response to crime.

Immigration remains a sensitive subject in South Africa. People continue to debate how immigration laws should be enforced, what protections the Constitution gives, and how foreign nationals should be treated. Any action against undocumented migrants has to follow lawful procedures. A person’s immigration status must be decided by the relevant authorities and not assumed from their nationality or where they live.

Mashaba’s latest remarks are likely to add to the debate over immigration and the future of the inner city. ActionSA is presenting the restoration of order in Hillbrow and Berea as a major priority, and it is promising a tougher approach to illegal occupation, crime and failures in law enforcement. Residents and businesses in both areas will be watching to see whether these promises lead to real change on the ground.
