Ghana Ambassador Reveals Son’s Bullying Experience As He Warns Citizens In US
Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has urged Ghanaians living in America or planning to relocate there to pay close attention to the communities and environments they choose, following recent cases involving two Ghanaian nationals in New York.
Smith’s warning comes amid growing concern over the death of 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, who was shot while walking to school in the Bronx, and the discovery of the body of 24-year-old Joseph Owusu in a bag in Brooklyn.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme on Saturday, November 7, the Ambassador acknowledged that Ghana’s diplomatic missions are expected to assist citizens in distress but explained that the Embassy cannot know the circumstances or living conditions of every Ghanaian in the United States.
He also disclosed that his own son had experienced bullying at school, an issue he said he had formally reported to the school authorities. Smith indicated that he would consider removing his son from the institution if the matter was not addressed.
According to the Ambassador, his son was subjected to pressure to adopt American slang and speech patterns from his first day at school. He said such treatment could make African children feel isolated and unwelcome.
“My son has been tormented. I asked him to report it to the authorities; it got me very worried, and I expressed worry to the Principal,” Smith said.
He further expressed concern that some of the bullying he had encountered involved Black students targeting other Black students.
The Ambassador said he had also written to the US State Department about the bullying concerns and whether there could be any connection between such experiences and the recent killings.
However, the circumstances surrounding the two cases remain different. Javits was fatally shot in the Bronx on October 29, while police have been investigating several possible motives, including robbery, mistaken identity and school bullying. No suspect had been named in the information provided.
Joseph Owusu’s body was discovered in Brooklyn, and surveillance footage later showed unidentified individuals removing a bag containing his remains from a vehicle. His cause of death had not yet been established.
Smith’s warning therefore comes as Ghanaian families seek answers and authorities continue to investigate the separate cases.
