Former Sundowns Defender Backs Bafana Decision to Omit Pirates Star

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Phelelani Mpangase believes Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi’s omission from the latest Bafana Bafana squad is justified.

Sibisi has been an important figure for Orlando Pirates, where he has taken on the responsibility of captaining the team. His performances have attracted attention from supporters, particularly because of his leadership role and experience at the highest level of South African football.

However, his absence from the national team selection has generated discussion among football followers. Some supporters may have expected the Pirates defender to be included, but Mpangase believes the decision made by the national team technical team is understandable.

The former Sundowns defender’s comments have added another perspective to the debate surrounding the squad selection. While Sibisi remains an experienced player at club level, national team selection is not guaranteed by reputation or captaincy alone.

Bafana Bafana coaches have to consider several factors when choosing their squad, including current form, competition for places and the qualities required for the upcoming matches. Every player selected must fit into the coach’s plans, meaning some well-known names can miss out.

For Sibisi, the omission will likely be disappointing, especially considering his responsibilities at Orlando Pirates. Nevertheless, it also gives him an opportunity to concentrate on his club performances and work towards earning another call-up in the future.

Orlando Pirates will continue to depend on their captain as they compete in domestic and continental competitions. His leadership and experience remain important to the Buccaneers, particularly during a demanding period of the season.

Mpangase’s position also highlights the difficult decisions national team coaches face when selecting players. With several defenders competing for limited places, not every footballer performing well for his club can be included in the final squad.

Although Sibisi’s omission may not please all Pirates supporters, Mpangase believes the decision is justified. The defender will now have to keep producing strong performances at club level if he hopes to return to the Bafana Bafana setup.

For now, the debate surrounding his absence shows how closely South African football supporters follow national team selections, especially when established players from leading PSL clubs are left out.
