Sixteen of the Western Cape’s 25 local municipalities will be governed by coalitions.

This follows the conclusion of vote counting after Wednesday’s local government elections.

According to the Western Cape’s electoral officer, Michael Hendrickse, the capturing and auditing of all results have now been completed.

He said statistical anomalies that required resolution had been resolved. These include objections lodged by contestants that were deemed material to the results.

“Following an objection, we can confirm that there has already been one recount, which has now been concluded in a single voting district in the Breede Valley Municipality in the presence of party agents.”

Compared with the 2021 local government elections, the ANC lost five percentage points in support.

For this reason, the party’s Cape Town metro chairperson, Ndithini Tyhido, said it would only analyse the results following the publication of the final results on Sunday.

“We’ll wait for tomorrow for these results to be formally announced because we are also aware that there are about 33 disputes that have been launched in the metro.”

Across the province, Tyhido said the ANC’s provincial leadership would analyse the results and determine how to proceed with coalition negotiations.
