FIFA U-17 WWC: ‘History Makers’ — Super Falcons Star Babajide Salutes Flamingos

Omorinsola Babajide has saluted Nigeria’s Flamingos after their historic triumph as 2026 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup champions.

The Super Falcons winger, who plays in Europe and has represented Nigeria at senior level (including in WAFCON success), shared a vibrant celebration of the young side’s achievement.

“HISTORY MAKERS!!! NAIJA NO DEY CARRY LASSTTTTT OOOO 🤩🤩🤩BIG UP THE FLAMINGOSSSSS!! WORLD CHAMPIONSSSS 🇳🇬 🥳😮‍💨🥇”

On Saturday, the Nigerian U-17 women’s team defeated Japan 2-1 in the final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco.

Goals from Awawu Bashiru (39th minute) and Oluebube Umejiaku (47th minute) secured the win, with Japan scoring a late consolation.

This marks the first time an African team has won the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup (inaugurated in 2008).

It is also Nigeria’s first title in the competition and makes the country the first African nation to claim the U-17 World Cup in both the men’s (Golden Eaglets) and women’s categories.

The Flamingos recovered from an opening 2-1 group-stage loss to Poland to win their remaining matches, including notable victories over defending champions North Korea and Brazil in the semi-finals (3-1).

Babajide’s salute reflects the broader excitement across Nigerian football circles. Senior players and officials have hailed the young squad’s resilience, skill, and historic breakthrough under coach Akeem (Hakeem) Busari.

The victory elevates the profile of women’s youth football in Nigeria and Africa, following earlier bronze medal finishes by previous Flamingos sides.
