Fans Fuming as Pitso Explains Cruel Snub of UEFA Champions League

PITSO MOSIMANE EXPLAINS ADEN MCCARTHY SNUB AS MBOKAZI GETS BAFANA RECALL – DEFENSIVE SELECTION SPARKS DEBATE!

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has opened up about his defensive selection decisions ahead of South Africa’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Kenya, explaining why promising defender Aden McCarthy missed out despite his impressive performances in European football.

McCarthy, who currently plays for Azerbaijani outfit Sabah FK, has attracted attention following his encouraging displays, including scoring in the UEFA Champions League. However, his recent achievements were not enough to secure him a place in Mosimane’s final squad for the crucial encounters against the Harambee Stars.

Speaking on SABC, Mosimane acknowledged the youngster’s progress but insisted that national-team performances and previous contributions must also count when selecting players.

“We saw Aden McCarthy. He scored also, right? He scored in the Champions League. But we need to give Mbokazi an opportunity to be back with the national team because he has done exceptionally well for the national team,” Mosimane explained.

The Bafana mentor was referring to Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who returns to the national setup after recovering from injury. The Chicago Fire defender previously impressed during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making his return an important addition to South Africa’s defensive options.

Mosimane also highlighted Olwethu Makhanya’s impressive performances, further explaining the difficult competition for places in central defence.

With experienced and emerging defenders competing for limited positions, the coach faces an increasingly challenging selection headache. Ime Okon, Makhanya, Mbokazi and Lebone Seema are among the options available as Bafana prepare for their upcoming assignments.

South Africa will host Kenya at Orlando Amstel Arena on 13 November before travelling for the return encounter on 17 November.

Mosimane’s decision is understandable, particularly considering Mbokazi’s previous contributions to Bafana and the importance of maintaining continuity in a competitive national-team environment.

However, McCarthy’s Champions League progress should not be overlooked. At just 22, he represents an exciting defensive prospect whose development deserves continued monitoring.

International football should reward both consistency and current form. While Mbokazi deserves his opportunity, McCarthy must remain firmly in the conversation.

Ultimately, competition for places can only strengthen Bafana Bafana as they pursue further success.

Do you agree with Pitso Mosimane’s defensive selections? Should Aden McCarthy have been included ahead of another defender?
