ANC and MK Party Prepare to Take IEC to Court Over Alleged 30,000 Voters Irregularitie

The African National Congress (ANC) and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party are preparing to challenge the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) over alleged irregularities involving more than 30,000 voter records in the Sedibeng District Municipality, Gauteng. The dispute centres on concerns raised by the ANC’s Sedibeng regional leadership, which claims to have identified thousands of questionable entries, missing residential addresses and duplicated identity details in the voters’ roll covering Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi local municipalities. According to the ANC, an analysis of the certified voters’ roll dated 7 August 2026 identified 32,182 voter records without residential addresses. The party also flagged 34 instances in which identical identity details allegedly appeared in more than one voting district. One of the most concerning findings involved 1,582 registered voters reportedly linked to a single residential address at 23 210 Lerothodi Street in Sebokeng Unit 13.

Other addresses allegedly associated with unusually high numbers of registered voters include 1454 Mareka Street in Sharpeville, with 1,256 voters, and 14659 Khaketla Street in Sebokeng Unit 11, with 965 voters. ANC Sedibeng regional secretary Jason Mkhwane said the discrepancies warranted urgent investigation and that the party was preparing to approach the Electoral Court to seek verification of the disputed entries and appropriate legal intervention. The MK Party’s Sedibeng region has also thrown its weight behind the ANC’s objection, formally associating itself with the complaint over alleged electoral irregularities in the district. In its submission, the MK Party expressed support for the ANC’s objection, which was lodged under Section 65 of the Electoral Act of 1998.

The parties are seeking answers from the IEC regarding the accuracy of the voters’ roll and the measures taken to verify the disputed records. However, the alleged irregularities do not, on their own, establish electoral fraud or wrongdoing by individual voters. The claims require proper investigation and independent verification. The developing dispute places further pressure on the IEC to address concerns about the integrity of the electoral process as political parties continue to scrutinise the administration of the 2026 Local Government Elections. Both parties maintain that a credible and accurate voters’ roll is essential to protecting public confidence in South Africa’s democratic system.
