ANC Leads Nationally As DA Dominates Major Metros In 2026 Local Government Election Results
The latest results from South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections point to a fiercely contested political landscape, with the African National Congress (ANC) maintaining its position as the country’s largest political party nationally, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) is recording strong performances across several major metropolitan municipalities.
With approximately 98% of votes captured, the ANC is leading the national standings with 30.22%, followed by the DA with 24.53%.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) occupies third position with 9.62%, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has secured 6.25%. ActionSA follows with 5.57%, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has 4.74%, and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) stands at 1.96%.
Despite the ANC’s national lead, the results reveal a significant challenge for political parties seeking to govern municipalities independently.
A total of 122 hung councils have reportedly been recorded, meaning coalition negotiations are expected to play a decisive role in determining who controls several municipalities.
In the metropolitan municipalities, the DA is leading in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, demonstrating its growing electoral strength in Gauteng.
The party is also firmly ahead in Cape Town and appears to be heading towards another outright majority.
Meanwhile, the MK Party is leading in eThekwini, marking a significant performance in KwaZulu-Natal.
In Nelson Mandela Bay, the DA is ahead, although the municipality is heading towards a hung council.
The ANC is leading in Buffalo City and Mangaung, but neither municipality has delivered an outright majority according to the reported figures.
The results suggest that South Africa’s political landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with no single party enjoying overwhelming national dominance.
With 122 hung councils on the table, coalition agreements, political alliances and negotiations will determine the next phase of local government across the country.
