AMA presents 20 tricycles to Assembly Members to boost sanitation operations
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has presented 20 tricycles to Assembly Members to strengthen waste collection and sanitation operations across electoral areas in the metropolis.
The tricycles were presented by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, to the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Musah Ziyad, on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The intervention is expected to improve the ability of Assembly Members to mobilise residents for community sanitation exercises and facilitate the collection and evacuation of refuse from neighbourhoods.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, who witnessed the presentation, commended the Mayor for what he described as a practical investment in waste management infrastructure.
He said government was working to expand the country’s waste management infrastructure through the construction of additional waste transfer sites, while some development partners had also expressed interest in supporting the initiative.
Mr Ayariga stressed that effective waste management required investment across the entire chain, from collection and transportation to the final evacuation of waste.
He said the AMA’s intervention aligned with government’s efforts to improve sanitation infrastructure and urged other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to follow suit by allocating more of their internally generated funds to productive waste management initiatives.
The Minister also called on Assembly Members to intensify public education and mobilise households to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
He emphasised that environmental sanitation should not be limited to individual homes but must extend to the wider community.
