Digital Health Systems Shutdown: Afenyo-Markin Demands Health Minister Briefs Parliament

According to a report by UTV Ghana today being Friday, October 6, 2026, Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the Minister of Health to appear before Parliament and provide a detailed explanation regarding the shutdown of the country’s digital health systems.

He believes the development raises serious concerns that require urgent attention from the government and the relevant authorities.

Afenyo-Markin’s demand comes amid concerns surrounding the disruption of digital health services and the possible consequences for healthcare delivery across the country. He has stressed the importance of ensuring that Parliament is properly informed about the circumstances that led to the shutdown and the measures being taken to address the situation.

According to the Minority Leader, the Health Minister must take responsibility for explaining the situation to lawmakers, particularly given the important role digital platforms play in the administration and delivery of healthcare services. He believes Parliament deserves clear answers about what happened, why the systems were shut down and how the government intends to restore normal operations.

The shutdown has also raised questions about the country’s preparedness to manage digital infrastructure within the health sector. Digital health systems are increasingly important in supporting patient information management, healthcare administration and communication between medical facilities and relevant institutions.

Afenyo-Markin’s call is therefore expected to increase pressure on the Ministry of Health to provide clarity on the matter. He wants the minister to address concerns about the disruption and explain whether adequate arrangements were put in place to prevent interruptions to essential healthcare services.

His demand also highlights the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public healthcare infrastructure. Parliament, as the country’s legislative oversight body, has a responsibility to scrutinise decisions that could affect the delivery of essential services to citizens.

The Minority Leader is consequently urging the Health Minister to brief lawmakers so they can better understand the situation and determine the appropriate steps needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The development is likely to generate further discussions in Parliament as lawmakers seek answers and assurances about the future of Ghana’s digital health systems.
