Accra Streets to Be Shut Down – Mayor Allotey Announces Major Christmas Trading Plan for Traders
Accra Mayor, Hon. Nii Kpakpo Allotey, has announced plans to temporarily close selected streets within the Accra Central Business District (CBD) to create trading spaces for traders ahead of the Christmas shopping season.
The announcement is expected to bring relief to traders who traditionally experience increased business activity during the festive period, as shoppers troop into the capital to purchase items for Christmas celebrations.
Speaking on the planned arrangement, the Mayor said: “From next week, we’re going to block some streets for you to sell on them.”
The statement signals the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s intention to make designated streets available for commercial activities during the busy Christmas shopping period.
The move is expected to provide traders with additional spaces to display and sell their goods while giving shoppers more opportunities to access products within the central business district.
Accra Central remains one of the capital’s major commercial destinations, attracting traders, retailers, wholesalers and customers from different parts of the country. During the Christmas season, commercial activities usually intensify as families and individuals prepare for the celebrations.
However, the increased movement of traders, shoppers and vehicles often places pressure on available space, making traffic management and pedestrian movement important considerations for city authorities.
By temporarily blocking selected streets for trading, the Assembly appears to be seeking a way to accommodate the seasonal increase in commercial activities while organising the use of public spaces.
The arrangement could also create opportunities for small-scale traders who depend heavily on the Christmas period to increase their sales and improve their earnings.
Nevertheless, the implementation of the plan will require effective coordination to prevent unnecessary congestion and ensure that emergency access, pedestrian movement and the activities of businesses outside the designated areas are not unduly affected.
Traders are also expected to comply with any guidelines issued by the Assembly regarding the approved locations and conditions for conducting business.
The Mayor’s announcement comes as businesses prepare for one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
For traders in Accra’s CBD, the proposed street closures could provide a significant opportunity to take advantage of the Christmas rush.
With the promise that some streets will be made available from next week, attention will now turn to how the Assembly implements the arrangement and manages the expected increase in commercial activity.
The initiative, if properly organised, could make Christmas shopping more convenient while giving traders greater access to customers during the festive season.
