VIDEO: Foreigner Buys Sea Turtle From Roadside Traders, Returns It To Ocean In Lagos

According to a report by The Nation Nigeria on Friday, November 6, 2026, a foreign national has attracted attention on social media after purchasing a sea turtle from roadside traders in Lagos and arranging for its release into 1the ocean in an apparent effort to save the endangered marine animal.

The incident, which was captured in a viral video circulating online, has sparked conversations about the illegal trade in wildlife, the protection of endangered species and the need to discourage the exploitation of marine animals in Nigeria.

The video shows the foreigner approaching traders reportedly selling the sea turtle along a roadside near Eko Hotel in Lagos. Rather than walking away, the visitor decided to purchase the animal, apparently to prevent it from being killed or sold to another buyer.

According to a Nigerian man who witnessed the incident, the foreigner confronted the traders and eventually bought the turtle before making arrangements for its return to the ocean.

The eyewitness, who recounted the incident in the video, said he was leaving the hotel area when he noticed the foreigner engaging the roadside traders over the animal.

He explained that the visitor’s decision to buy the turtle was aimed at rescuing it from the traders and giving it another opportunity to survive in its natural habitat.

The foreigner’s actions have since attracted positive reactions from social media users, many of whom praised the decision to save the animal rather than ignore its situation.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the presence of protected wildlife in informal roadside markets and the activities of traders involved in the capture and sale of marine animals.
