Solly Mapaila Reveals Which Parties SACP Is Willing To Work With
The South African Communist Party (SACP) has signalled that it could join forces with the African National Congress (ANC) to govern municipalities where no party secures an outright majority, but has ruled out working with the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus.
SACP General Secretary Solly Afrika Mapaila outlined the party’s position while discussing possible coalition arrangements following the 2026 Local Government Elections.
He said the communist party would be prepared to cooperate with the ANC where necessary, particularly in municipalities that require parties to combine their support to establish an administration.
However, Mapaila made it clear that such flexibility would not extend to parties he considers ideologically opposed to the SACP’s political principles.
He described the DA and Freedom Front Plus as “reactionary forces” and said the party would not enter into coalition arrangements with them.
The comments place the SACP’s relationship with the ANC back in focus as political parties consider how to govern municipalities where election results have not produced a clear majority.
Although the SACP and ANC have a longstanding relationship through the Tripartite Alliance, the communist party contested the 2026 local government elections independently, marking a significant change in how the two organisations participate in electoral politics.
The SACP has also previously criticised the ANC’s decision to enter the national Government of National Unity with the DA, arguing that the arrangement conflicts with its political and economic positions.
Mapaila’s latest remarks suggest that, despite the party’s independent participation in the elections, it remains open to working with the ANC at municipal level where coalition arrangements become necessary.
The position also indicates that the SACP intends to draw a clear distinction between parties it considers acceptable partners and those it rejects on ideological grounds.
With coalition negotiations expected to shape the administration of several municipalities, the party’s stance could become an important factor in discussions involving the ANC and other political organisations.
For now, the SACP has left room for cooperation with its traditional alliance partner while maintaining its opposition to any arrangement involving the DA and Freedom Front Plus.
